Fitted Form
Three bespoke fitted wardrobes designed, made and installed for a family home in Lewes. Each one was built specifically for the room, combining generous storage with a routed door design that echoes the existing joinery throughout the house. The aim was to make the wardrobes feel like part of the architecture rather than added furniture, while using the available space as efficiently as possible.
BRIEF.
The client wanted three full-height fitted wardrobes with a mix of hanging space, shelving and drawers.
One wardrobe sat beneath a sloping ceiling, while the walls throughout the room were noticeably uneven. The new wardrobes also needed to match the routed door detail already used elsewhere in the house, so the finished result felt consistent with the existing interior.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS.
The uneven walls meant a standard installation would have required large fillers, which would have weakened the built-in appearance.
Instead, each cabinet was individually scribed to follow the surrounding walls closely, creating cleaner lines and a much more considered fit.
The wardrobe beneath the roof pitch presented a second challenge. Standard concealed hinges would have restricted access to the hanging space, so 165° hinges were used to allow the door to fold much further back. This improved access without changing the overall appearance of the wardrobe.
THE MAKING PROCESS.
The project began with a detailed site survey, measuring each wall, ceiling line and available opening while also working through the client’s storage requirements.
Back in the workshop, the cabinets, doors and drawer units were built individually rather than adapted from standard modules. Birch plywood was chosen for its strength, stability and clean finish, making it well suited to large fitted furniture where consistency and longevity matter.
The routed door profiles were machined to echo the joinery already present in the house. Integrated routed handles kept the fronts visually clean while also reducing the clearance needed around the doors, allowing the internal storage to sit slightly further forward.
Each wardrobe was dry assembled before leaving the workshop so door alignment, drawer movement and internal spacing could all be checked in advance. Once on site, the cabinets were carefully positioned, scribed to the surrounding walls and adjusted to create consistent margins throughout.
